Edalex congratulates Darren Ponman, deputy principal of Hunter School of the Performing Arts (HSPA), for being named one of “The Best Educators in Australia Influencing Culture and Reform” by The Educator. The recognition highlights Ponman’s significant contributions to the Australian education sector, particularly through his visionary approach to integrating technology and competency-based learning.
Influential educators have never been more important to encourage and retain teaching talent. Their skills, expertise and knowledge can help reverse the sector’s workforce trends and offer new leading-edge possibilities for students across Australia. The Educator’s Most Influential Educators 2025 celebrates those who exemplify that broader vision. From policy influencers and technology leaders to grassroots innovators and wellbeing champions, these individuals are confronting some of Australia’s most pressing educational challenges head-on.
Ponman’s influence is rooted in his leadership at HSPA, where he spearheaded the development of a school-wide Mastery-based system. A cornerstone of this system is the Learner Dashboard, which provides students and parents with 24/7 access to student achievement reports, promoting outstanding transparency. This dashboard, co-designed by Ponman and collaborative partners, Edalex (through their platform Credentialate) and Learning Vault, was a finalist in the 2024 Learning Impact Awards in the “Competency-Based Innovation” category. The Learner Dashboard, along with HSPA’s mastery learning initiatives, also led to the school being named one of the “5-Star Innovative Schools 2023” by The Educator.
Ponman has also demonstrated his innovative leadership by developing AI chatbots. These include a “Mastery Learning approach adviser” to help users understand and apply the Mastery learning model, and a “PBL Coach – Project Management” to guide students through project management. The impact of Ponman’s initiatives on technology implementation has earned him invitations to speak at various education conferences both in Australia and internationally.
Under Ponman’s leadership, HSPA was awarded the “Secretary’s Award for School Achievement” at the Public Education Awards 2024 for its Mastery Learning System. Ponman himself was also named to “The Best Educators in Australia Hot List 2024” by The Educator for the school’s work on mastery learning, credentialing, and the Learner Dashboard. This recognition highlights his commitment to driving innovation and fostering a culture of excellence in education.
Dan McFadyen, Managing Director of Edalex, commented on the collaboration: “Darren is a rare educator that sees what needs to be done to change the lives of his students and then sets about doing it!”. He added, “He recognised early that the way to make the mastery model of teaching scalable and sustainable was to involve technology as the enabler”. McFadyen highlighted the partnership’s success, stating, “Working together and co-designing the technology solution for Hunter School for the Performing Arts (HSPA) has been a breakthrough moment in digital recognition technology development as we provision for the entire learner journey throughout high school”. He concluded that the work at HSPA is “a testament to what can be achieved if your vision and belief holds true and you take others on the journey with you”.
